Looking for great/solid school antibullying policies

Today Kevin Cullin's column in the Boston Globe addressed a cyberbullying
problem in S. Hadley that led to a girl hanging herself. I specifically
value the remarks from Barbara Coloroso who said "What the community, and
even more so the students, needs is a STRONG antibullying policy that
EXPLICITLY explains what it is. And is has to include cyberbullying and

what they are going to do with any bystander who may have contributed to
this mess and protect them if they are a witness."

Do you feel that your school has a strong/clear anti-bullying policy for
student handbooks and are willing to share it, would you please send me a
copy?

Thanks!

Re: Thoughts on the new iPad...What are yours?

This has been an interesting discussion so far. As David Pogue said in the Times on Friday (paraphrase from memory), anyone who makes strong predictions about the future of the iPad without having even touched one is taking a very big risk.
Seems to me though, that at least the IDEA of the iPad and its potential in education, is one quite pregnant with possibilities.
This first iteration leaves a lot to be desired, but the very fact that the shortcomings are so obvious bodes well for the appearance of at least some of them in pretty short order (and if not by Apple then somebody else, like Asus or its Taiwanese competitors).
For right now, I choose to look on the bright side and see the great opportunities to make computing a lot more simple and intuitive for a great many more people -- and yes, the iPad has got to become much more of a platform for user creativity and not just a passive viewing/listening device. Otherwise, it's just a very expensive ViewMaster.
Sort of along the lines of this conversation, just wanted to pass along a couple of videos that I find most interesting to view and contemplate:
1. Singapore 2015, produced by the country's economic development agency in March 2007 I believe.
http://www.ida.gov.sg/About%20us/20070903145526.aspx
Given that it took probably 6 months to produce, it's fascinating to think that the conceptualization behind it is probably 3 and half years old now. Some prescient thinking here! I really like the design of the tablets in this piece.
2. What Happens When You Give a Class of 8 year olds iPod Touches?

Re: Thoughts on the new iPad...What are yours?

I come at this from two perspectives, both having taught for a number of
years at Lab top school and as a developer of software for 20+ I have been
developing CD Rom based history software since 1988 and for the last almost
2 years while teaching part time have developing 20 Ipone apps- and just did
the first in history 480 documents in American history released yesterday
for the iphone-
After that long introduction- I believe that Ipad will bring about the
revolution that we have been talking about for oh so many years. In 1990
when I sat down to write my first American History Cd's I believed they
would replace text books. Over the years I went through the adoption
process had them actually adopted by a number of states but it never
resulted in any real sales- why- there was not the penetration rate of
equipment nor the willingness of local administrators to take the risk and
move away from the text book-
I think the Ipad will provide a tipping point- It is relatively
inexpensive- much more mobile then a lap top- and will become ubiquitous.. I
also think that something else is slowly happening that I do not think
anyone is paying enough attention to. If 15 years ago many school
administrators were afraid of replacing text books with computers- mostly
because of parents who looked at the computers as toys- Now 15 years later
we have a generations of parents who have themselves grown up with the
computer and will be comfortable with the iPad replacing the textbook.
I would not worry about some of the technical limitations of the machine-
next years will be better- every design process has its tradeoffs and slowly
they are overcome- As to those who are concerned that the product will be
only for viewing and not creating- if you saw excerpts from the
presentation, one of the software packages that was shown was a drawing
program- All of the people and companies developing for the Iphone
including us can now easily turn our attention to making I-Pad versions of
our program ( they all run unchanged but in a small window) as is. Apple
has provided the tools and the direction how to do it and will not require
that much work, so expect to see many many creation tools.
The only concern i have as a developer is that it will be difficult to get
the sort of prices one would want- when so many things are 99 cents- We have
taken a chance and priced ours a $2.99. ( We get as much as $18 for some
professional apps) so that may be a hinderance- but we will see.
All in all I see a bright future for the tablet in education and I see it
replacing the laptop in many school in coming years.

Re: Thoughts on the new iPad...What are yours?

I'm reluctant to wade into this, as it seems to me that it is too easy to
drop one's biases into the discussion, and too hard to see into the future
of a device that no one has "touched" yet <pun intended!>. And some great
minds (Joel, Fred, etc.) are already in the fray. Still, as regards
educational uses, I think the iPad misses the mark - at least in the current
incarnation.

First: I take education to mean learning, not school. It's an obvious
point, but we who have lived and breathed schools for nearly all of our
lives can miss this at times.

So, I look at my own learning, as well as that of my students. When I
really learn, I almost always create. And I almost always create using the
tools of communication. I create notes, diagrams, essays, listserv
messages, emails, and, on occasion more multimedia creations (less than our
students, I suspect). I should say that I'm a big fan of exploration, which
perhaps doesn't seem like creation, but in fact my richest exploration
experiences always have the flavor of creating something - a simulation.
And I don't mean creating a finished product - I mean capturing my thinking
in a "document" (for lack of a better, broader, word) external to my own
mind.

These learning experiences might happen in a classroom, in a coffee shop, at
a meeting, on a park bench.

So, my question is this: is the iPad designed to facilitate creation? Or is
it better suited to observation? I'm afraid it is the latter. Joel wants
Flash, which makes sense, and will almost certainly come in a later
incarnation (heck, it's just software!). The desire I projected onto my
hopes for the iPad, though, is for a tablet I can write on. My dream is a
book reader that let's me annotate. A smooth and intuitive (i.e.,
Apple-like) version of OneNote that lets me capture and organize and
sometimes convert to searchable text the ideas that run through my mind in a
meeting, the diagrams that help me think about things. A math-working
device that captures my equations (and maybe helps me with the symbol
manipulation). In short, a creation device.

If this dream were fulfilled in the iPad, maybe it would "revolutionize
education" or at least make a dent. As it stands, though, I just don't see
how a large-format iPod Touch is going to do this. It seems to me little
more capable than a Touch, and much less portable, taking away the
game-changing aspect of having a device at the ready anywhere in exchange
for ... smooth larger video?

I've used tablets, and they are bulky, the software seems clunky, the
screens are poorly reflective so that they don't serve well as book readers
and, even so, some schools find them transformative. My hope was that the
iPad would change all this.

Ah, well, still seeking change I can believe in <grin>.

Re: Thoughts on the new iPad...What are yours?

A very simple comment: the iPad is a step forward to larger computers
becoming more like mobile phones. Many people will like that, given that
there is nostalgia for landline phones because of their simplicity and
durability. (The black rotary in my parents home has been working about as
long as I've been alive.)

If we move into a realm where more of our users (faculty and students) use
their own computer hardware for school work, then the more reliable it is
the better. Even the lack of multitasking could be a benefit, since it
prevents users from overloading system resources with a pile of background
widgets.

Maybe the biggest lost is a definite shift from laptops being creative tools
to iPads being information access tools. I've already seen that with
iPhones-- why carry a laptop when you can do email, calendars, contacts with
the phone. It's not that iPads can't create content, but...

I think we're going to lose a lot of related to computing becomes a sealed
environment, and you toss it if it stops working (like a mobile phone). At
the same time, it will make computers boring in a technical way, which
Shirky believes is the key for them becoming socially interesting (and
transformative).

So it goes.

Re: Thoughts on the new iPad...What are yours?

I can see a system like the iPad revolutionizing education...but not =
without a lot of help.

Here is my list of what I think a device like the iPad needs to have for =
education:

At least one USB port
Expandable memory
Multitasking - no duh!
Ability to install any compatible apps I want
Built in Microphone (or an audio-in port to use an external one)
Ability to beam a document out to multiple units at one time, and =
ability to beam multiple documents to a single unit. (I had a Palm 8 =
years ago that could do this. It has all but disappeared on recent =
portable devices.)
Ability to browse the web as easily as if I was on a laptop or desktop
A built in app that allows you to write over any other application =
(highlighting, adding notes, etc.) - (Okay, this is one thing you can do =
on the iPad!)
6-hour battery life (another thing the iPad can do)
Able to create and deploy images
Sturdy
Price point of $500

What is on your list of what an iPad should have?

Chris,

Read your post this morning. I agree with your frustration regarding not
being able to run multiple apps concurrently. I read the following post
later today and it seems to address some of your other concerns.

We are wondering how you handle this at your schools, most expressly if
you have the parents sign off on any kinds of forms , permissions, etc.
In addition, does the teacher have free reign s to what can be put on
the wiki or has your school developed a set of guidelines for faculty in
this regard?
Any helps or documents you could share would be appreciated.
thanks

Re: Digital Portfolios

Hi, Lisa

We are also interested in Mahara, and we've installed it on a test Linux
server. So far, my Linux expert (running our Moodle and Zimbra servers) is
pretty unhappy about how complex it is at the server level, and how it
appears to have some rough edges to work out.

In my limited testing of it so far, I very much like it's conceptual premise
(student-centered, student choice about sharing, groups, profile page,
artifact pages, portoflio pages) but it's look and feel is pretty white and
bare bones. Our students and faculty are used to Moodle, which also isn't
that attractive, but we wonder if Mahara needs to go through one or two more
development generations first. Also, it may not have the full support
forums and investment of Moodle and Zimbra to fall back on yet.

So, good conceptually, and we're interested. We need to test more next.

Center for Innovative Teaching - San Francisco and DC

Registration is now open for the fifth annual Center for Innovative Teaching (CIT) summer workshops. See:

www.centerforinnovativeteaching.org

With great excitement, this year's CIT has gone bi-coastal with sessions in both San Francisco and the Washington, DC, area. CIT offers workshops for middle and high school educators in key academic, co-curricular and leadership areas, plus an Integrated Technology Symposium for school leaders and educational technologists.

I personally lead CIT's third annual Integrated Technology Symposium for School Leaders -- designed specifically for heads of school, assistant heads, principals, curriculum directors, technology specialists and other academic professionals who are seeking ways to create broad, cross-disciplinary exposure to best practices in technology integration. An optional add-on day has been scheduled for those interested in creating their own 1:1 laptop program. The Symposium is offered twice this year,
once in DC, June 21-24, and once in San Francisco, July 26-29.

I also teach the fifth annual digital oral history workshop, Telling Their Stories: Producing Web-Based Digital Video Interviews, July 19-July 23, in San Francisco.

Please encourage your colleagues to explore the offerings by visiting our website at www.centerforinnovativeteaching.org, or feel free to email me with any questions.

Regards,

Re: What an opportunity....

Thanks Dave for the heads-up on this. We will ask our students. They were
all buzzing about the State of the Union, so we will see if we can get some
further interest.

Digital Portfolios

Please excuse the cross posting.

My team and I are doing some research about digital portfolios to use with
our students. We currently use Moodle with an SSO option to integrate Google
Apps for our students and are thinking we would like include Mahara. Does
anyone have any experience with this tool and integrating it within Moodle?
Benefits, integration ideas, pit falls, things to avoid?

Many thanks!

Educon 2.2 Get Together-- See you there!

Hi, All

Things are looking good for our get together tomorrow night at Educon 2.2.
There are about 30 to 35 ISED-L and ISEN Ning types planning to head over to
http://www.publichousephilly.com/ right after the 6-8 p.m. event. The
address for the Public House is 2 LOGAN SQUARE [18th Street between Arch and
Cherry] PHILADELPHIA [P] 215.587.9040.

We also have a special guest planning to attend. For maps and more details,
see http://isenet.ning.com/forum/topics/educon-22-get-together

I sent out private invites to most planning to attend two weeks ago, and
there's been no change since then. If you don't walk over with us after the
6-8 p.m. event, just ask for the Jim Heynderickx group when you arrive at
the Public House. There's a good chance we'll have their private room.

Dinner is optional-- just come for drinks and chat if you can. It doesn't
look like I will have any trouble with my flight tomorrow, but please carry
on in good spirits if I have any delays.

Other than that, I'll see you tomorrow evening!

Re: Teacher candidate screening

Demonstration of lessons that integrate technology into "regular"
curriculum is a must - not just typed lessons, but video or live
examples. Classroom management w/ tech is a key piece when integrating,
so it's important to observe this.

Re: Teacher candidate screening

This comment recently came up on twitter:from @acmcdonaldgp
Just thought of authentic tchr interview question. Give tchr comp and 5 min=
utes to answer a very challenging question. Practical?

My response was that it would truly show how creative and innovative a cand=
idate could be. "Answer" could be in any form - verbal, typed, visual, pres=
entation, ???

It has possibilities.

Jayme,

We looked at pickAtime, Teeso, and Virtual Paragon and selected pickAtime.

Used it last November to schedule conferences for 1,200 students JK-12.
It worked very well for us. Parents and faculty told us it was very
convenient and easy to use. Prior to pickAtime, our conferences were
scheduled using mostly manual processes. The most important requirement
for our selection was ease of use, but another major selling point for us
was pickAtime's integration with our WhippleHill portal. We easily
uploaded all our course and roster info from WhippleHill to pickAtime.
The other very nice feature was single signon. Parents and faculty simply
clicked on the pickAtime link within their portal logon and instantly had
all their conference info in front of them.

Feel free to call me and I can give you more info if interested.

I HIGHLY recommend Harpeth-Hall. Their librarian is Karen Douse, who is
also on the board of the Online School for Girls.

schools to look at interesting tech programs, curricula, hardware/=20
software implementation within the classroom (you get the idea). I =20

Re: School Continuity Plan

I've done several and just finished up one for CareFirst Blue Cross /
Blue Shield. I find that the National Institute for Standards and
Technology is a great resource. If you do an Internet search on NIST IT
Contingency Planning you will get a few templates and guides.

Also, Federal Emergency Management Agency has put together some
information at http://www.ready.gov/business/plan/planning.html

In addition, there's been several studies of problems after 9/11 and
Katrina out on the Internet. The two biggest lessons were:

1) Human life is the most important resource so make sure you have
really good contact information with multiple modes of communicating in
place including phone / text / email / web. That should be your number
one priority. Also try to have some kind of check-in and bulletin board
to leave messages. Sahana - http://www.sahana.lk/ - is a free and open
source disaster management tool and you can take a look at their site to
get some ideas. They are currently running a site for Haiti and are
used by New York City for their disaster management plans.

2) Treat it like an insurance policy. Over 65% of businesses without a
disaster plan never made it back into business after an incident.

Hope this helps - feel free to ask me questions.
